effortless complexity: learning from water-town
doing more with less
Learning from the local water-town architecture, this design applies one methodology to create an infinite complexity of forms with a minimum of means.
Complex rhythms are formed by repetitive elements such as banded gable roofs that become north and south walls, and white masonry planes perforated with a variety of square openings that become infill walls to the west and east.
dynamic urbanism on a regular structural grids
A riverside promenade, pedestrian only laneways, and a series of community plazas, create a dynamic, legible, and permeable circulation network that maximizes potential for public life. A fresh food market and community centre form the anchors for the otherwise speculative shopping strip.
The entire project grows out of a regular 8.0 x 8.0m structural planning grid to accommodate underground car parking throughout the entire site.
both and
This effortless complexity presents as both a cohesive whole and an assemblage of strong individual buildings.
