a 21st century Ponte Vecchio: Shanghai 2010 World Expo Bridge
Contrary to the Shanghai government expectation of ‘glitz and glamour’, this project offers a shockingly raw material expression of global exchange derived from the strong visual connotations of shipping containers.
The project consists of several linked pontoons bridging the Huangpu River. In order to accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic, the bridge was organised into 3 distinct layers; a dense ‘slab’ of programs, sandwiched between an open thoroughfare below, and an open-air container exhibition-art space above.
Re-use of the pontoons is based upon the EXPO’s environmentally sustainable sub-themes, and will keep this memory and message alive for years to come. The pontoons will eventually produce income by the LED screens’ advertising revenue.
