ring roads AND peripheral parks: SHANGHAI PERIPHERAL PARK
Can Shanghai match its economic explosion with social, cultural, and ecological advancement? Can these other urban dimensions be embraced in one landmark project circumnavigating the city: a 100 Kilometre Peripheral Park?
Current planning of green open space for metropolitan Shanghai proposes isolated urban parks within the inner city and larger but equally isolated spaces within and adjacent to the outer ring road.
This intervention proposes to link these larger spaces with a series of continuous ribbons of social, cultural and ecological landscapes. By allowing 24 hour access, a continuous green peripheral park alongside the outer ring road, is provided. The ribbons consist of sports facilities and programs, internal and external event spaces and ecological landscapes focusing on sustainability. This peripheral park provides a leisure, recreation and ecology driven re-cultivation of the urban landscape of Shanghai.
