the beautiful and the extraordinary: HOPETOUN BUSH RESORT, 1997
The development of this project was undertaken with close consultation with the local rural community. The aims of the design were to generate tourism and a new sense of place and community in a regional town. Fourteen types of local utilitarian farm building were re-appropriated for guest accommodation. To transform these over familiar types, a strategy of manipulated perspective, inspired by the work of artist Stephen Bram, was introduced, which also created a spatial continuity between the freely scattered buildings. The strategy makes the utilitarian and ordinary local types beautiful and extraordinary.
